The Last Ride
His dusty boots traversed through the sandy path, it was not covered with as much gravel as before, this time it is was much smoother, much finer grains of sand.
Finally they took the time to smoothen this path. Must have been 20 years already. Or maybe it just that I noticed it today.
Trevor walked on forward, he past the canteens, then the latrines, the stretch was unbearable but he was immune.
This smell I wouldn’t miss.
Then he finally he reached the stables and standing at the end was Jonah. His black pearly eyes looked at Trevor as he approached. It was a familiar sight and moment, whereby they had before a race.
“ Took you look enough !” Jonah tilted his head as he sneered.
“Ain’t gonna miss that attitude of yours.” Trevor snickered.
“ You know I walked the same path to here today and it seemed a long one and I couldn’t help but noticed that they actually cleaned up the damn thing !”
“It’s like no one ever listened to our feedback on improvements.”
Trevor proceed to dust off his boots.
“ You know I actually like the path when it was filled with gravel, the clinking of them on my shoes were a pleasant ring to my ears. And after each race that we won it was music.”
“ You sure about this ? Once we do this, it's the last one.”
Jonah ended the sentence with a deep delay.
“ One last ride, my friend, my last race.”
Trevor looked straight into Jonah’s eyes. He bent down to buckle up his boots, put on his helmet and then stretched.
“ Alright hop on back my friend !”
Jonah gestured with his head. Trevor climbed onto the saddle of Jonah’s back and sat comfortably. The leather saddle wrinkled and creaked.
“ Goddamn, you’re heavy !” Jonah complained.
Trevor let out a laugh and they both rode off to the start line of the race.
