The Hunter and the Macaw

The Hunter and the Macaw

He knelt down, examined the mud on his boots and he knew it was near. Graves Herbert then stood up shifted his weight on the back foot in order to balance himself on this slippery uphill slope. On his right hand he held a Lee- Enfield bolt action rifle, an antique that had passed through generations of his family, now it was his most prized weaponry. A dependable robust workhorse which he made enhancements fitting in this current age. A red dot scope capable of switching to thermal imaging with a click of a button, a barrel modified to take the .224 clark rifle cartridges and a modified single action trigger that can be activated remotely. One might question Graves decision in investing so much on a much obsolete rifle but none have known its secret. It could shape shift, it was a spirit weapon and it could only be controlled by a hunter and in Graves’s hands it could exist in a second form, in a form of a hyacinth macaw.

In a swift motion, Graves aimed at a high angle and hurled his rifle towards the trees, he then whistled . Almost instantaneously, the rifle sparkled and transformed into a hyacinth macaw, spreading its wings and flying through dense forest.

The air here is strangely cool I thought, as I soared through this dark woods. I looked for clues around, any traces that a six hundred pound monstrosity would leave. I think Graves would have known that this was not a just a normal hunt, over the course of four months we have heard of sightings of abnormally large animals roaming in close proximity to urban environments. These cases were not isolated and I am sure Graves is certain. He must be back, the hunter of hunters, the spirit wanderer. A sorcerer who steals the spirit weapons off hunters and releases them into the wild. However who might this six hundred pound bear belong to, I wondered. The atmosphere became increasingly cold as I traversed into another part of the forest. A whistle sounded, must be Graves, I squawked.

“Its abnormally cold.” Graves murmured to himself as he received a telepathic message from Blue, his spirit weapon, the hyacinth macaw.

“ I am sure he is near, you keep moving towards the south, I will catch up.” Graves whistled back. Graves tracked through the slopes of this region, he avoided the flat ground as he knew it would the animal would predict him coming from this path.

“ More effort I guess, never thought this would be easy though.” Graves whisper to himself.

The path was slippery and hilly hence he had to rely on this hands for support at some point, he grabbed on to the branches and pushed himself forward. It worked and he used this method to cover half a mile.

“Patience.” He thought, he reached out to nearby branch and grabbed onto it, then pulling it and catapulting himself forward, before he proceeded a strange sensation halted him. A cold and almost damp sensation overwhelmed his hands, he turned his palms and looked at them, pure white.

“Snow ! ” and he looked forward, the leaves, the branches, the trunk of the trees and the ground were covered in white snow. It was like someone, something scattered chalk and left its traces. Graves immediately whistled.

I see it, from above it seems that almost half a mile of the forest is covered in snow. Must be it, somehow I think its Frosty. Which means the wanderer got to Jim. Jim Savage, the redneck hunter. But why did he release Frosty here and why release him at all, I squawked back.

“ We don’t know for now but lets keep moving forward.” Graves whispered back as he stood up from examining the snow from the ground. Just then a snap of a tree branch echoed towards him, Graves turned to his right. Two massive glowing red orbs hovered, it floated up slowly and then stopped. Comparing it to the height of the tree the orbs were beside, Graves guessed the animal would have been almost two metres tall, and he was right. Red streaks emitted from the glowing red orbs, they spread down to the ground, like red flashes of lightning they slowly revealed the massive monstrosity, a six hundred pound polar bear with glowing red eyes and emitted red lightning from its body.

Graves breathed in and whistled the quietest tone he could manage. “ Its Frosty, alright.”

You sure ?

“ I never lie ”

And I knew why, “ Because you are looking right at it !”

“ Yes…” Graves then rolled and jumped onto the flat ground and sprinted, he recalled Blue but he did not know how far he went so he just continued running. A loud growl followed by a succession of trampling sounded and Graves knew Frosty was giving chase.

I closed my wings letting my body freewill before I spun around and spread them again, turning back to the direction I came from. I could feel the spirit recall and it gave me the extra speed but was it enough to reach Graves on time, I had to.
