The Great Gatsby Treatment

Draft of a treatment for the Great Gatsby promotional film

I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission.

To the far end of the pool, Nick approaches the bar table. He looks uncomfortable, slightly out of place and he takes each step in an overcautiously manner. Men of different esteem filled the space in every corner, accompanying them were women dressed in the most extravagant outfits whom Nick would hardly had the chance to meet in his entire life if not for Gatsby’s party. Nick astonished by the lavishness of the party did not notice the presence of Jordan and it was only after she gently cradled his arm in hers, did he acknowledge her presence. She leads him to the front of the bar, where a man in a pink suit hands him a drink. Nick receives it as he lifts up his head to smile at the man, he realises that without a doubt, it was the host of the party, Mr Jay Gatsby.

… And through the chance encounter of Gatsby, led me to reunite him with with an old flame. To Gatsby she was the paragon of perfection whereas I knew that the fickle winds of life would reveal her capricious facet. Nick sitting comfortably on a couch gets up to his feet and walks off, leaving Gatsby and Daisy in their passionate dance.

Duet happens.

The dance ends with Daisy letting go of Gatsby’s arm as she floats away. Gatsby is alone however he turns the corner, Tom comes towards him in a menacing manner. He flashes a sardonic smile at him. Nick and Jordon appears in the background, they watch as this event unfolds.

At that moment, I feel like a spec of dust in this dust storm, trivial. I could only watch as Tom unfolded Gatsby’s hidden visage and Daisy drawing further and further into herself. Gatsby then then gave up, only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away.

As Tom and Gatsby have a scuffle and argument, Daisy reappears. Tom reaches out to her, she falls into his arms but she then floats over to Gatsby. However her fugacious feelings are revealed when she shuffles gently away. Leaving Gatsby alone once again.
